I have often placed it ahead of my family, my religion, and my own health. He told me my blood pressure was 178/104, I was spilling 2 grams of protein in my urine, I had exercise-induced asthma, I was 35 pounds overweight, and my total cholesterol was 278 with an HbA1C of 6.3. Gerry looked me in the eye and told me I would probably be on dialysis in 2 years. As a vascular surgeon, I knew that the average survival for this situation was about 7 years. For the last 10 years, integrative medicine has become the main focus of my practice."
Integrative Medicine is the popular name for a health care practice paradigm shift that centers on finding and correcting the root causes affecting the patients’ problems. Instead of covering up their symptoms with drugs (chemicals that are not naturally produced and consumed by humans), Integrative Medicine emphasizes the discovery and application of the newer technological advances that are related to the process of aging and the disruptors of health. Chronic inflammation, stress, environmental toxic influence, and alienation of the sense of yourself and your surroundings are some of the multiple factors that need to be addressed to achieve wellness.
* This quote is from a Chassidic master, the Maggid of Mezritch (d. 1772), who was over two hundred years ahead of his time in predicting the magnitude of analytics that we currently use in providing precision medical care today. Rabbi Schneerson (1902 - 1994) uses this quote to put forth the concept that when the body is healthy, it is possible to have a greater positive effect in all matters.
Mitochondrial health (subcellular organelle responsible for energy production and normal cell function) is another primary concern. Addressing the disruption of intracellular nutrition is a major therapeutic modality. Correction of metabolic limitations and improvement in mitochondrial function, along with exercise and proper sleep, are essential to restoring the normal homeostasis mechanisms, which are the key to a healthy adaptive behavioral response. Preserving a healthy nutrition capacity is vital to reclaiming your health. Homeostasis is the ability of our body’s cells to regenerate themselves back to their normal state. This is the hallmark of healthy aging and the beginning of our journey.

Before my 60th birthday, I walked into my friend Gerry Friedman, MD’s office for a long-overdue check-up. I have spent the past 36 years of my professional life learning and operating in a field I dearly love: general and vascular surgery. For the last 10 years, integrative medicine has become the main focus of my practice. I am off statins and anti-hypertensive medications and only take Metformin, specific vitamins, diet and exercise regularly to control my diabetes and hyperlipidemia. These changes have allowed me to enjoy excellent strength and stamina.
